Causes of Nail fungus
Nail fungus is a highly contagious condition that is spread easily, especially throughout the summer months. Nail fungus can be spread through public areas where people are walking barefoot. Locker rooms, public pools, water parks, hotels are all very common areas where one can pick up toenail fungus.
Nail fungus is more common in older adults because as we age, our nails become weaker and more brittle. These small cracks and chips allow for nail fungus spores to get into the toenail. Nail fungus will show on the outside of the nail but can lurk much deeper under the nail bed.
Preventing Nail Fungus
Nail Fungus can be prevented in most cases by simply wearing shoes in public spaces and being mindful of those in your household who have nail fungus. Even in your own home, you need to wear shoes or disinfect your showers and floors if someone has nail fungus.
Treatment for Nail Fungus
There are many treatments for nail fungus. Traditional nail fungus treatments include oral and topical treatments. However, oral medication carried some risks. Lamisil, a traditional nail fungus medication, requires liver testing to monitor effects while topical can take six months to a year to show noticeable improvement.
Regenerative nail fungus treatments are safe and effective at eliminating nail fungus. This procedure is completely painless and performed right in our office. It only takes about 20 minutes from start to finish and there is no recovery necessary.
